Description

Heritage 1925 Gaff Rigger I take many calls from traditionalists looking for classic timber sailing boats, so I'm very pleased to be in a position to offer this lovely raised deck gaff rigged sloop designed and built by the Wilson Bros in Tasmania in 1925. The vessel was constructed to compete as a gentleman's racer originally and then revisited in the 1940's to provide some accomodation. At 31 feet with an 8 foot beam "Cygnet" was fashioned in the timber of choice at the time Huon Pine. Mast and gaff (upgraded in 2008) are oregon and the gaff rides on a brass jaw saving the gentry from the inevitable broken nails from trying to dip the gaff in a bit of breeze. The interior is all rosewood and accomodation (bunks) has been provided for 4 in a double and two singles. Auxillary propulsion is provided by a lovely old Nanni 14 HP shaft drive, which is in excellent nic (will push Cygnet along at 8 knots) and runs on the proverbial "smell of an oily rag" The current owner has outlayed 15 to 20K on renovation and maintaining "Cygnet's" good looks. He has however maintained the traditional look and feel of the vessel with interior lighting per 2 gimballed kero lamps (that'll keep the mossies away too). The Nanni is provided for via a deck filled 30 litre underfloor tank and a dedicated start battery. A second battery powers up the sounder, bilge pump, reading lights and navigational lights. The main is a slab reefing setup, the headsail a new (2009)self furling model and there is a spinnaker and spare jib which is in fair nic. This fabulous old "gaffer" from days of yore was last out of water September 2009 and antifouled at the time and is in lovely condition as these pics will attest. Easy to sail and very forgiving for beginners Cygnet is a bit of yesteryear that anyone would be proud to own. So grab a case of cabernet sauvignon and your deckies and lets go do something dignified.
